its been awhile

i know.. its been awhile since ive blogged.. almost two whole months.. and i dont even know if anyone is even reading this blog anymore...

i've been busy preparing for my new school term... this week and last week was ... welll quite rough. next week's gonna be heavier even.

Being in a new school makes me think of when i was in secondary 1, with 4 whole years of exciting, albeit unknown stuff going to unfold and happen before me. Seemingly, i was less terrified of whats before me... now im having so much doubt its turning unhealthy...

The parallel to secondary school is perhaps the things that u've gotta plan for 4 years, rather than 2 years in jc. . . in secondary school i was like a warrior, charging and fighting for every opportunities that comes, or even did not cross my path.

Perhaps when you're older you get more timid.

Or im losing steam and slowing down, getting tired.

There is no doubt that i grew and learnt alot during secondary school... i showed so much determination that it scares me sometimes, when i looked back in awe.

Now it is time for me to pick all these up, and more... so that i can have a fruitful time during my undergrad year.

courage is all i need.

take care folks..

Practice makes.... perfect?

Hello dear friends, its been awhile! Thanks for tagging. Here's something i would like to share with you before i go for my university camp!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was giving out class work one day in literature class when one student asked me a question:

''Why do we need to do homework at all? why do we need to practice?"

Without giving it much thought, i answered "Because practice makes perfect". Now, i gave the student this answer due to a few reasons. Namely, I REALLY believed that practice makes perfect. I always believe in doing things a 100%, and more. Second, like many of you here reading this Blog post, this phrase ''practice makes perfect'' has been ingrained into my mind for YEARS, ever since i was in primary school. By teachers , tutors and perhaps even family members. Do you remember how irritating it was when teachers, after giving you maths homework, chanted relentlessly on various occasions, that ''practice makes perfect?"

And so, not surprisingly, the student retorted ''But NOTHING is perfect!", an answer used by many students to throw their parents or teachers off the line.

Now, many teachers might have brushed this small incident aside. But after the lesson, i went back thinking and pondering about it. In actual fact, this student had asked a REALLY GOOD QEUSTION.

After leaving the school, i learnt that practice doesnt really make perfect. (yes, students, you may clap now, but perhaps you might want to read on first before cheering silently). BUT WHY?

Let me give you an example here. Imagine me, at the age of 13, someone who had just failed her PSLE maths, and was now suffering from MATHEMATICS PHOBIA. Having failed many times, I decided to practice maths everyday, for at least 5 hours. However, i did not dare to approach anybody for help ( being afraid that teachers will think that im stupid). However, when i received my first test, i realised that i
STILL DID NOT DO WELL.

WHY?

Because i have been practicing all the wrong things. Despite doing all the sums wrong, i didnt realise and continue to practice, DOING THEM ALL WRONG, OVER AND OVER AGAIN!. And hence, over time , i got used to repeating my mistakes, thinking that they were right, but in actual fact, they were NOT.

and therefore, instead of saying that ''practice makes perfect'', we should say that

PRACTICE MAKES PERMANANT.

This means that no matter you are right or wrong, once you practice it again and again, it will STAY IN YOUR BRAIN. If you practice the right things or the right subjects, for example, when you write an essay or do a maths sum and you did it in the right way or the correct method becuase you dare to ask or verify with your mentor, the RIGHT METHOD will stay in your BRAIN (if you practice it enough). HOWEVER, if you practice the wrong things OVER AND OVER AGAIN, it will stay in your brain and during exams, all the wrong stuff would also be written on the papers.

confused? good. read on.

When you practice the wrong things you will of course write the wrong things on the exam paper. will you still get PERFECT results? (ok, maybe PERFECTLY WRONG results)

so, all my dear friends,

PRACTICE MAKES PERMANANT. Yes, practice DOES makes perfect, only when you practice things in a PERFECT MANNER, then you will get perfect results. That is something that i've learnt, and hope to share with you. =) And to the student who asked me this question, thank you for allowing me to learn as well!

whats YOUR hangout?

i bet nobody is studying at home during the holidays. It seemed just like yesterday when i was still in sec two, having my holidays! (sec 2 cos by sec 3 i didnt have quite a life.... was in school for remedials and CCAs)

here are my favourite hangouts during my secondary school era:

1. compasspoint after school. Then, cp doesnt have much stuff... there wasnt any mosburger, yakun, swensens', sake sushi. etc..so we'll just eat at some fast food stores.. there was this shop called ''captain cook'' selling long-john silvers - like stuff. except they serve FAT FRIES with CHEESE DIP!!! fondly remember eating the ice-cream waffles there too.. the food there is like cheap and nice!! ahh.....

2. Eating pasta mania at tampines mall then watching movies (during the hols only). I will have my favourite creamy chicken pasta... last time the plate costs only like $4++ maximum $5 only lor!!! somemore the share so big can eat until puke.

3. omg, like orchard!! anywhere there.. heeren.. cineleisure.. far east... taka/wisma.. one of my closest friend from primary school will meet with me once a year and go run all around orchard to crazy shop (or window shop). we are still doing that! (i mean the meet once a yr thing).

4. Plaza sing. cos thats like another nearest venue for cinema besides TM.

whats YOUR favourite hangout?

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

HELLO!!!

hello students! it has been almost three weeks since i left school.. for those of you who know, my new job allows me to travel to different schools to see how the other students are like.. while i was at one particular school last week... i thought of you guys... missed you guys terribly.

There was this school where the students have to abide by MORE rules that you guys... and their schools have very little facilities... but they are a really good bunch of students.. which made me think about you guys... please appreciate the school that you guys are in now... air-conditioned classrooms.. nice and conducive environment like the learning hub and multiplex.. a lift where people carrying heavy stuff can take...being allowed to bring handphones to schools... all these simple things , the students in that school didnt get to enjoy...

i do hope that you guys are really learning and enjoying as much as you can and should..

Dont know if anyone is reading my post here... if u are.. do drop me a tag/comment on your views..

for those who want me to link them.. pld place your link here so that i can link you guys.... you people change your blog links like the new england weather..

till then, see you and take care! will drop by pss when im free!

ive been really busy for the past weeks...

anyway, this is an inspiring video for you guys to enjoy. hope that you guys will learn something from this clip...

he made the best out of what he's given- and more, what about you?

i remember giving students from two of my geog classes pieces of plasticines.. one for each student. some are given bigger pieces, some smaller.. of different colours too. they were not allowed to choose the size or colour of the plasticine. i then gave them two mintues to do whatever they wanted with the dough.

at the end of the two minutes, some of the students made beautiful figurines... even for those with ugly colour or small portion. while some of them chose to make ugly figures.. the others did nothing and folded their arms, slept, talked to their friends, etc.

its the same in life- some of us are given very little, but some of us are given alot. but the main difference lies in what you choose to do- or what you choose NOT to do with what you are given in life.

remember, it is what you choose to do with your life which matters. think about it.

student wrote this for me. i'll take this as a compliment (above)
yesterday, i bid farwell to 2n4

today, i bid farewell to 2n2 and sec1 band members.

felt quite sad. although i know some of the kids doesnt really care. I printed little notes for them and gave them chocs as a small token to show them i appreciate them. will they throw it away? or will they keep it until years later? i dont know... but all i know is that ive done my best.

some of the kids ran up to me and asked for hugs.. some of them took photos of me... quite shocked.. some of them wrote notes.. haha. although you dont expect the kids to shower you with alot of cards or gifts like in convent schools.. but its enough.. enough to make me miss them already, even though i will still be in school till tuesday. the notes they wrote to me serves as a reflection on my teaching skills. . . the gals in 2n4 made me a giant card ..im glad that some of them actually like my teaching style.. one of them even commented on my gesture and tonality. .=)

during band i played DRUMLINE for them. i dunno if they're inspired by it anot, or will they forget the show in awhile. i saw some of them being quite impressesed by the show. forgot to do anchoring with them today... on the goal-setting part. SIGH! means that i wont get to do it with them ever again! OH NO!

should i go for some other courses? ive got so much to do.. sign-language (where to learn?) 1-star kayaking (who wants to go with me?) nlp (no $$$$) etc...

I know i will miss talking and entertaining in front of a class.

dont worry, i will link my students' blog address here as soon as possible

hello, world

guess this is somewhere, that i can blog about some of my perspective and perhaps the stuff that intriques me...

enjoy.
